Thanks to your support and over 3000 votes I managed to get into the last 16 for Guitar Idol. My video has had over 3500 views! I feel really great about this as Guitar Idol is the biggest guitar contest there is and draws players from all over the world.
I never expected to do well in the competition because my composition is almost 3 minutes worth of melody before the guitar solo kicks in. To be honest, I wasn’t even going to enter, because for me music isn’t about a competition where “he who plays the most notes wins”…. for me music has to transport me somewhere, or make me imagine a scene from a film…
Anyway, after being reminded that Guitar Idol is about entering an original composition rather than mindless shredding over a backing track, along with a good bit of encouragement from my friend Boo Littlewood, I decided to go for it.
I’m glad I did! I met loads of new friends and made the last 16! Only the last 8 played at the Live Final, but I decided to drive down with Tom Quayle, who was one of the judges (Check out his stuff here! http://www.tomquayle.co.uk/) All the finalists played brilliantly despite some serious sound problems on the day!
I was also privileged to sit in on the judging process as a silent observer. I have to say that the judges were really fair and really know their stuff. Shaun Baxter was one of the judges. I used to devour his guitar magazine articles as a kid. When he used to reveal the secrets of virtuoso guitar playing, to us, he was like some kind of rebel member of the magic circle, giving away their precious knowledge!!! Meeting him again (he used to teach me at the London Guitar Institute) was a great pleasure. The judges went through each performance in great detail and took factors like the sound problems into consideration too.
Andre Nieri (Pictured below) emerged as the winner. He was amazing and I think we will be hearing a lot more from him in the future. He is surely set to be a rising star in the guitar playing community.
The highlight of the trip for me was hanging out at the pub with all the contestants after the show. We were sharing stories, laughing and having a great time. It felt really cool that such a diverse bunch of people from all over the world who were brought together by a love of music and of mad guitar playing!
Thanks again for all your support…. Thanks to Levi Clay and the Guitar Idol Team…Thanks also to all the finalists Andre Nieri, Jack Gardiner, Yiannis Papadopoulos, Luca Mantovelli, Cameron Allen, Morgan Reid, Damir Puh, and Michael Tillotson who I now count as my friends.
Right, enough contests! I really need to get back to my album finished, not long till its due out!!!
